Named after the legendary fruity candy it so deliciously resembles, Runtz has left an indelible mark on modern cannabis culture. Born in Los Angeles in the late 2010s from a cross of Zkittlez and Gelato, it earned legendary status through its stunning colors, sweet flavor, and 2020 Strain of the Year win. Today, while “Runtz” inspires countless new spin-offs, the original remains the gold standard.
Hybrid (usually described as balanced, sometimes slightly indica-leaning)
Zkittlez x Gelato
Commonly reported around 20-29%, varying by grower and batch
Euphoric, talkative, giggly, relaxed
Fruity candy, tropical fruit, berry, creamy sweetness
Lab data most often points to caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene
Runtz, also called Runtz OG, is a hybrid made by crossing Zkittlez with Gelato. It came from the Runtz crew in Los Angeles around 2016 to 2017. Most accounts credit Ray Bama with the idea and a grower known as Nick with making the cross. Long Beach rapper Yung LB became the strain’s most visible promoter.Â
However, the Cookies brand later helped distribute it, which is why you’ll see some people credit them as the breeder.
The same cross was also released as Gelato Zkittlez, and in the Netherlands it’s sometimes sold as Zwirlz. Sources differ on the exact Gelato cut used, and some name Gelato #33. Classification varies as well, from a balanced 50/50 hybrid to slightly indica-leaning.
Runtz is known for strong bag appeal. Buds are typically dense and compact, with colors that range from lime and forest green to rich purple, often in the same jar. Thin orange pistils run through a thick layer of frosty trichomes, and the flower usually feels sticky and resin-heavy when you break it up. How much purple you see depends a lot on the cut and growing conditions, so one grower’s Runtz may look noticeably greener or darker than another’s.
Runtz is a potent hybrid, with THC commonly reported somewhere around 20-29%. Batches vary, so check the label on the specific product you’re buying.
Get ready for an instant wave of cheerful euphoria that brightens your mood and makes conversation flow effortlessly. It’s famous for inspiring giggles, easygoing chatter, and pure happiness. As the session continues, a pleasant body calm smoothly settles in without weighing you down, making Runtz a wonderfully balanced companion for any fun outing.
Dry mouth is the most commonly mentioned side effect, and some people report anxiety or a headache when they have too much. Experiences vary by person, dose, and batch, so start low if you’re new to strong flower.
Runtz is a go-to social strain – a perfect pick for hanging out with friends, conversation, music, or a laid-back night in, since the upbeat, chatty effects tend to come without heavy sedation.Â
Some people say it helps them decompress and shake off stress after work, and a number of customers also report enjoying it earlier in the day. Others save it for evenings when they want to relax but stay present. These are consumer reports, not proven medical benefits.
Runtz was named after Runts candy for a reason. The aroma is sweet and fruity right out of the jar, with notes people often compare to tropical fruit, berries, and citrus candy. Some people also pick up stone fruit tones like apricot.
The flavor carries that candy sweetness through, and the smoke is often described as smooth and creamy. Some batches have a light gassy or peppery edge on the exhale, while others stay almost purely sweet.
Runtz lab reports typically report caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene as the leading terpenes, which fits the hints of spice, citrus, and earthy depth under the sweetness. Terpene profiles can shift between growers and batches.

Runtz is a hybrid, most often described as balanced or close to 50/50, although some people and brands say it’s slightly indica-leaning. Many people find the effects upbeat and social at first, with body relaxation arriving later.
They’re generally considered the same cross. Both combine Zkittlez and Gelato, and the strain also goes by Runtz OG. Different growers and cuts can still produce noticeably different results under either name.
Not necessarily. Some, like Pink Runtz, are commonly reported as Runtz descendants. The name has become so popular, though, that some products use it for strains with different or unclear genetics. Check the lineage on the product label when you can.
It can be for some people. The effects of Runtz are often described as upbeat and talkative rather than sedating, and some people use it earlier in the day. It’s still potent, so start with a small amount until you know how it affects you.
