Few strains live up to their name quite like Permanent Marker. When you pop open a jar, the very first thing you’ll notice is a bold, chemical, ink-like aroma layered over floral soap, sweet candy, and a heavy touch of gas. Bred by Seed Junky Genetics and released by Doja in 2022, this strain quickly turned from an obscure item on a few selective California menus to a coast-to-coast favorite, snagging a prestigious 2023 Strain of the Year title along the way.
Indica-dominant hybrid (often cited around 70% indica, 30% sativa)
Most commonly listed as (Biscotti x Sherb Bx) x Jealousy. Sometimes also said to be (Biscotti x Jealousy) x Sherb Bx.
Commonly around 25-30%, though percentages vary by grower
Euphoric, tingly, relaxed, calm
Marker ink, floral soap, sweet candy, gas
Lab data most often points to myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene. Linalool is also frequently cited.
Permanent Marker is an indica-leaning hybrid bred by Seed Junky Genetics, the Los Angeles breeding house led by JBeezy. It was selected by Doja Pak of the independent California brand Doja Exclusive. The strain launched on both coasts in 2022 and spread quickly, landing on hundreds of menus within its first year.
Its lineage combines three modern heavyweights: Biscotti, Sherb Bx (a Sunset Sherbet backcross), and Jealousy. Most people agree on those three parents, but not on the order of the cross.Â
Many dispensaries and sources list it as (Biscotti x Sherb Bx) x Jealousy, while others describe it as Biscotti x Jealousy crossed with Sherb Bx. Classification varies too. Some menus call it a balanced hybrid rather than indica-dominant.
Permanent Marker is known for dense, compact buds that are often rounded or cone-shaped and feel heavy for their size. The color usually mixes olive and forest green with purple. Some cuts are so deeply purple that the thin orange pistils almost disappear from a distance. A thick coat of frosty trichomes covers most buds, which gives them a sugary look and a sticky, resinous feel. The amount of purple varies a lot between growers, so some batches will look greener than others.
Permanent Marker is potent. THC is most commonly reported in the 25-30% range, but individual lab results can fall below or above that depending on the grower and batch.
Expect an immediate, euphoric lift that brings a bubbly, tingly energy that’s perfect for sparking creative conversations or easing into a social vibe. As the high gently evolves, a warm, tranquil body sensation takes over, melting away tension and settling you into pure relaxation.
Keep in mind that this strain can be a delightful creeper, building in intensity well after your last puff. Because of its potency, starting with a smaller dose is always smart, letting you dial in the ideal experience for your personal tolerance.
Most people reach for Permanent Marker when they want to wind down without feeling knocked out right away. The early lift and heavy finish make it a common pick for late afternoon or evening. That might mean a relaxed hangout with friends, music, or a movie on the couch.Â
Some of our customers say it helps them manage stress and switch off after a long day, and others mention a boost in appetite. At larger doses, a few people find this strain sedating, and accordingly, enjoy it at night before they sleep. Â
The name comes straight from the aroma. When you get your hands on some Permanent Marker, you’ll discover that an open jar really does smell like a fresh permanent marker, with a sharp, solvent-like chemical note that fills the room. Underneath that, most batches carry floral, soapy tones, a sugary candy sweetness, and a gassy funk.
The flavor usually follows the aroma closely. You can expect a sweet, candy-like inhale and a pungent, gassy, chemical exhale that lingers, and you may also pick up hints of ammonia or tobacco on the exhale. Certain batches lean fruitier, with berry or sour lemon candy notes.
Terpene data varies. Lab-tested samples of this strain most often show myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene, and linalool is frequently credited with the floral, soapy edge.
Permanent Marker is one of those strains people ask for by name, and it rarely lasts long once it hits our shelves. Right now we’ve got Detroit Dope’s Permanent Marker 1.2g Live Resin & Liquid Diamond Infused Pre-Roll at 35.99% THC in Escanaba, a ready-to-go pick for anyone who wants that loud, gassy flavor with extra punch. Over in Menominee, the BabyFace Ray x Oakland Athletics Mini Hat 3.5g from Pressure Pack x Fire Society pairs Permanent Marker with ADL and tests at 28.76% THC.Â
Our selection is constantly rotating, though, so before you head out, check the live menu for Escanaba, Republic, Menominee, or New Buffalo, and dig through our flower and vape lineups to compare.

It’s usually classified as an indica-dominant hybrid, often cited at around 70% indica. Many people describe an upbeat, euphoric start before the body relaxation sets in, which is why some dispensaries simply call it a hybrid.
It can be a lot if you’re a newer consumer. THC is commonly reported around 25-30%, and many people say the effects keep building after the first few minutes. Start with a small amount and wait before having more.
For many people, yes. The chemical, ink-like note is what the strain is known for, though how strong it is depends on the grower, cure, and freshness. Some batches are more floral or candy-sweet in smell, with the marker note in the background.
Yes. Permanent Marker’s popularity has made it a common breeding parent for other strains. Crosses such as Magic Marker and Scented Marker have Permanent Marker as a parent, and it keeps turning up in new releases paired with other popular strains.
