Flying is already stressful enough without wondering if the weed vape in your bag is about to turn your trip through security into a whole ordeal. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple yes or no answer.
While you can bring a vape on a plane, having THC in that vape complicates things, even if cannabis is perfectly legal where you live. Here’s what you need to know before heading to the airport.
Can You Bring a Weed Vape Through TSA?

TSA isn’t hunting for your weed pen, though. Its officers are there to look for security threats, not dig through your bag hoping to find a stray cart. Still, if cannabis turns up during screening, TSA is required to report it to local law enforcement. From there, it’s out of TSA’s hands.
TSA also lists medical marijuana as allowed in carry-on and checked bags with “special instructions,” but that doesn’t give weed vapes a blanket green light. Cannabis still has to comply with federal law, and vaping devices have separate battery rules that prohibit them from checked baggage.
Can You Pack a Weed Vape in Your Carry-On?
If you’re traveling with any type of vape, your carry-on is where the device is supposed to go. TSA and FAA rules prohibit e-cigarettes and vaping devices from checked baggage because their lithium batteries can pose a fire risk. You’ll also need to protect the device from accidentally turning on while it’s packed.
We’ve seen this cause some confusion with customers, too: being required to put a vape in your carry-on doesn’t mean you’re allowed to bring the THC inside it through security.
The carry-on rule only applies to the device, not necessarily what’s inside it. Delta and American Airlines, for example, allow e-cigarettes in carry-on bags but separately prohibit passengers from transporting marijuana.
If you’re carrying separate vape liquid, normal TSA liquid limits apply. And whatever you pack still has to comply with federal cannabis laws.
What Happens If TSA Finds a Weed Vape?

CBD and hemp vapes fall into a slightly different category because they aren’t necessarily marijuana products. Right now, federal law generally defines hemp as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight, so some hemp-derived vapes can be federally legal.
If you’re flying later this year, though, check again before you pack. New federal hemp rules are scheduled to take effect in November 2026, with stricter limits that account for total THC and could affect many products sold as hemp today.
State laws can throw another wrench into things, especially with delta 8, THCA, and similar products. No matter what’s inside, though, a battery-powered vape still belongs in your carry-on.
Can You Bring a Weed Vape on an International Flight?
Flying internationally with a weed vape is a much bigger risk. Once you cross a national border, the cannabis laws back home don’t mean much, and neither does having a U.S. medical marijuana card.
Some countries ban THC outright, with penalties that can go well beyond having your vape taken away. You could face hefty fines, deportation, or even jail time. Don’t forget about layovers, either. A country you’re only passing through may have its own cannabis and customs laws.
Your safest move is to leave the weed vape at home. If you’re unsure about a particular destination, check that country’s official government and customs guidance before you fly.
